How to get unstuck on your fertility journey - the power of mindset shifts

Healing Through the Storm

I never imagined that my fertility journey would involve 4 years of IVF treatments, major surgery, dealing with male infertility, countless failed cycles, and repeated heartbreak. The emotional toll was overwhelming, and there were times when it felt like my dreams of motherhood were slipping away. But I chose to heal emotionally, shift my mindset, and build resilience. At 42, I gave birth to a healthy baby boy through IVF.

This journey wasn’t easy, but retraining as a Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) Master Practitioner and Life Coach during my fertility treatments transformed my experience. It taught me how to embrace change, heal, and move forward with hope — and I honestly believe it was what brought my miracle son into my world.

Feeling stuck is normal, but you don’t have to stay there

It’s normal to feel stuck sometimes on your fertility journey, and it doesn’t mean there’s something wrong with you. Often, it’s the limiting beliefs we hold — like “I’m not worthy of having a baby” or “I’m running out of time” — that keep us stuck. These beliefs can feel true because we repeat them so often, but they’re just thoughts, stories we tell ourselves – not facts. What if you could change those beliefs?

You don’t have to stay stuck. A shift in mindset can unlock a new perspective and are powerful, and they changed everything for me and the women I coach on their fertility journeys.

Understanding why you’re stuck: it’s more than just fertility treatments

It’s easy to blame the treatments, doctors, or your body when things aren’t progressing. But what often keeps us stuck is our internal dialogue — the beliefs and fears that have taken root in our minds. Many women feel like their bodies are failing them, but what if it’s not about failure at all? What if it’s the beliefs you’ve been carrying that need to change?

Here are five powerful mindset shifts that can help you break free from feeling stuck:

Mindset Shift #1: From self-blame to self-kindness

I spent a lot of time blaming myself — for not starting treatment earlier, for having that glass of wine, for eating poorly. But when I began my coaching training, I realised how unkind I was being. Would I say these things to my best friend if she were going through fertility treatments? No.

You’re doing everything right — treatments, healthy eating, and so much more. But sometimes, we’re our own worst critics. What if you chose kindness instead of criticism? Instead of asking, “What’s wrong with me?” ask, “What do I need right now to feel better?” Choosing self-kindness opens space for healing and growth.

Mindset Shift #2: From comparison and envy to focusing on your own journey

The unknown is terrifying — it’s easy to get sucked into comparing yourself to others, especially on social media. It seems like everyone else is having kids effortlessly while you feel stuck. But remember, their journey isn’t yours. No one else is walking your path with your story, experiences, or timing. Let go of comparison and focus on your own journey. This creates space for gratitude — for what you have, for your progress so that you can protect your own energy.

Mindset shift #3: From being overwhelmed to taking one step at a time

Feeling overwhelmed is natural during fertility treatments. But when you’re stuck in overwhelm, you’re not moving forward. Instead of overplanning, take it one step at a time. Focus on what you can control today, and trust that the next step will reveal itself when you’re ready. Write down your focus for the day and keep it with you as a reminder.

Mindset shift #4: From giving up to believing in possibility

It’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking, “What if this never happens to me?” But that thought can close you off to possibilities. What if you started believing in possibility instead of “never”? Believe that, no matter the outcome, you have the strength and resilience to face whatever comes. Your journey is about finding emotional balance and peace, no matter where it leads.

Mindset shift #5: From suppressing your emotions to feeling what you feel

We’re often told to “stay positive” during fertility struggles, but sometimes, we need to feel what we feel. Whether it’s anger, sadness, frustration, or grief, those emotions are real and deserve acknowledgement. Pushing them down doesn’t make them go away — it only makes you feel disconnected.

Allow yourself to feel your emotions without judgment. When you permit yourself to feel, you start to release those emotions, which creates space for healing.

Shifting your mindset takes time

A mindset shift isn’t a quick fix. It takes time and practice. Start small — focus on shifting just one thought today. Over time, those small shifts will add up and create new neural pathways in your brain. You’ll look back and see that the real transformation didn’t just happen with your fertility — it happened within you.
